Four Tips For An Organized Storage Unit

Posted on: 20 November 2015

Renting a self-storage unit can be a good way to get extra items and belongings out of your home. However, it is easy for the storage unit to be disorganized when you move all the boxes in. Here are some tips you can use to make sure your self-storage unit stays organized so you can find what you need.

Use Color-Coding for Your Boxes

When you move your boxes from your home to the self-storage unit, boxes from one room might be mixed in with boxes from another room as you try to fit everything in your car or truck. As a result, it can be hard to separate out the boxes when you get to the unit and move things in.

To make things easier, think about color-coding boxes. For example, you can use a piece of pink-colored tape to mark all your boxes from the bathroom and orange tape for all the belongings in your bedroom. That way, you can see at a glance where a box should go in the unit and get an idea of what might be inside it.

Make Space for a Walkway

With all your belongings in the unit, it might be difficult to get around when you need to retrieve an item. To make it easier to get from the front of the unit to the back, make sure you remember to leave a walkway in the unit. You will be able to reach what you need without tripping over a bunch of other boxes to get there.

Create a Map of the Unit

As you put things in your storage unit, draw a little map that helps you remember where everything is. A few weeks or months from now, you might not remember where your dishes are, and a map can provide guidance. Put the map right near the door so that it's easy to find when you need it.

Keep Important Things Just Inside the Unit Door

Another things you can do to make sure everything stays organized in your unit is to keep important things near the door. For example, if you know that you will regularly be heading to your unit for business files, you might want to put them as close to the door as possible so they are easily reachable and you don't have to disturb anything else.

Now that you have some ways to remain organized when you are renting a self storage unit, use the tips above to help you. Ask your storage unit company for more suggestions you may be able to use.
